Schools are more than just buildings, and they are
more than just places to learn. Schools are where many different people from
different families come together to create a school community ... a new school
family. Mainland is very proud of all of our family
members both past and present.
At first blush this seems relatively easy to
define. We presently have approximately 2100 students enrolled and about 300 dedicated
faculty and staff members; but our current population is only the tip of the proverbial
iceberg.
Like the pebble dropped into a pond, Mainland continues to create ripples that radiate
throughout our community, our county, our state and beyond. Since that first class of six
graduates that made up the class of 1902-03 there have been in excess of 25,000 Mainland
graduates of Daytona High School and/or Mainland High School. Since the classes of the
last 50 years were considerably larger than the first 50 years its easy to
extrapolate that, even considering natural attrition, more than half of those graduates,
some 15,000+ strong, are still alive. These former Mainland Buccaneers can be found in all
walks of life and have gone forth to hundreds of different colleges, founded innumerable
businesses and raised their own families. Many of the children of these graduates have
later become Buccaneers themselves. In fact there are many third, fourth and
fifth generation
Mainland students enrolled with us today. So, measuring the size or influence of our vast
family is difficult at best. The phrase "Buc Pride Never Dies"
is not just a motto. You can see it in our academic excellence, at every concert or
performance, at every sporting event, and especially at every graduation. Students,
parents, and grandparents
all Mainland Buccaneers.
The "People" section of this website has pages
that pay tribute to three general branches of our diverse family tree. Including:
- The principals who have led Daytona High School and/or
Mainland High School over the past century.
- The current faculty at Mainland that are, themselves,
Buccaneers and have returned to Alma Mater to keep the flame of knowledge alive.
- A sampling of some of our illustrious alumni and military
alumni.
