Ms. Porter in 1953

The legendary Marguerite Porter sponsored the first Glee Club for Daytona High School in 1925 and influenced thousands of music students covering two generations of Buccaneers. By the time she finally retired in 1953 Ms. Porter and her choruses had garnered virtually every award possible for our school. However, that was only the beginning. When Ed Langley took over the reins in 1954 he began yet another dynasty for Mainland choruses that continued to produce "Superior" performances at virtually all levels of competition. Mr. Langley might have even rivaled Ms. Porter's three decades of service to Mainland had he not been chosen to take over as the Music Director for Volusia County Schools in the mid-1960’s where he continued his illustrious career. This tradition of excellence recently culminated with yet another milestone for our music programs. Mainland’s Choral Director, Mr. Mario Pearson, was not only Mainland High School’s Teacher of the Year for 1998-99, but was also named as the Teacher of the Year for Volusia County Schools. The last decades have also seen our graduates attending some of the finest music schools in the nation including Stetson University, The Juilliard School and the Boston Conservatory. May the voices of Mainland continue to sing sweetly!

Mainland formed its first concert band in 1938 and played not only for school events but also at concerts for all of the area hotels. In 1939 the band numbered 44 members and began marching performances as well and Mainland has been marching proudly ever since. For over 60 years our marching bands and auxiliaries have been winning "Superior" and "Best of Show" awards for our school. Our band has also represented our school, our county, and our state at The Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York, and the Orange Bowl Parade in Miami. Mainland has always been blessed with outstanding band directors from Mr. Earl Williams in the 60’s, 70’s, & 80's right on through to our current director, Mr. Jerry Picott. Under his tutelage, the Buccaneer Band has been Superior Rated for the past four years by the Florida Bandmasters Association. Won First Place at the Sunshine State Festival of Bands in 1999. Won Grand Champions in Atlanta at the Music Festivals National Competition in 1999, and repeated as Grand Champions in 2000 in Orlando. In 2001 the Buccaneer Marching Band achieved its zenith by receiving Superior in District Competition from the Florida Bandmaster's Association as a Marching Band and as a Concert Band. Then, these outstanding students went on to garner Grand Champion honors in Chicago as the Best Overall Performing Group at the national Music Festivals Showcase. The high stepping Buccaneer Band is known far and wide, not only as the band to beat in competition, but also as the band to watch for sheer fun and entertainment!

They did it again !

2002 was another banner year. The Mainland Band won its Fourth Grand Championship at the Orlando Music Festival National Competition for Concert Band and Percussion. They also garnered Superior Ratings in the District and State Competition for their Jazz Combo. In 2003 and 2004 our band continued to excel by achieving superior ratings for Marching Band, Jazz Band and Concert Band at the Florida Bandmasters Association competition. Go Bucs!

In 2005 Mr. Picott was selected to be one of the new Assistant Principals for Mainland and turned the baton over to Mr. Keevin Gillard. Mr. Gillard is continuing our tradition of excellence by bringing home even more Superior ratings. Watch for updates soon!
