For those who grew up here in Daytona Beach it is difficult to believe that we were in the Clyde Morris Blvd. campus for 43 years. When classes began in the fall of 1962, the spacious, open design of our school was new and appealing. The classrooms were built up on a hill to catch the normal on-shore breezes coming from the ocean to help to keep us cool because there was no air conditioning in our schools at that time. As a matter of fact, it wasn’t until the early 1980’s that air conditioning, chilled water fountains and other "modern conveniences" made their way to Mainland. There was no math building or student services building, no portables, and the library ended where the mosaic murals were. The Senior Area was an outdoor patio behind the library where the computer labs and the television production areas later stood. However, one thing never changed. Mainland still continues to turn out class after class of outstanding, well-educated graduates.
