| Mainland High School A Century of Excellence |
| It might be expected that a school with a
hundred years of tradition would also have a history of many accomplishments as well. This
is true. However, Mainland High School never rests on the laurels and awards of the past.
While we are immensely proud of our rich heritage and proudly display our many trophies
from decades of long ago, we can be equally pleased with the decade we just completed. In 1991 Mainland continued our quest for excellence by earning the prestigious Blue Ribbon School award from the U.S. Department of Education for the second time since 1983, becoming the first school in Volusia County to ever do so. Then in 1992 (and again in 1995) Mainland was named "Best Overall High School in Florida" and one of America's Best Schools by Redbook Magazine and was recognized by the Florida Department of Education as a Model Technology School. As the decade continued Mainland continued to shine brightly as the star of Volusia County schools by again earning the Blue Ribbon School award for a third time in 1996; thereby becoming only the second school to do so in the United States. More recently Mainland participated as a key facilitator in writing and winning a multi-million dollar U.S. Department of Education "Challenge Grant" in 1997. That four year grant continues to benefit Mainland and five other participating schools around the nation. This past year Mainland became a National Service-Learning Leader School and was renewed as a Learn & Serve School. What is most impressive is that ALL of these awards were earned based on the overall excellence of the total program at our school and not just performance in one area. However, we would be remiss not to recognize the accomplishments of a few of our individuals and departments. The table below highlights just some of the outstanding accomplishments of our Buccaneer family over the last decade. |
