| Auxiliaries |
In addition to academic and athletic performance, the Buccaneers of Mainland have always been great artistic performers as well, and one of the areas in which this has been most evident is through the schools auxiliaries. Certainly the oldest of the auxiliary activities is that of cheerleading. Since the advent of organized sports at Daytona High School there have been Pep Squads in one form or another to cheer their Buccaneers on to victory and some of these squads had designated "cheerleaders." Our yearbook collection shows that the first formal squad of cheerleaders was fielded in 1943, and while the size of the squads have varied through the years their school spirit has never diminished. Mainland currently has Freshmen, Junior Varsity and Varsity squads of Cheerleaders supporting a myriad of school and athletic activities. As cheerleading has evolved our squads have also been active in cheer camps and competitions that include sophisticated gymnastics and synchronized dance routines and superior ratings abound. Chronologically the next group to come along was our majorettes. A feature twirler first performed with our marching band in 1946. A formal majorette corps first came along the next year in 1947 and these talented students have been pleasing crowds ever since. Although we have been blessed with many outstanding majorettes and feature twirlers through the years our 1998-2002 corps reached the highest pinnacle for Mainland High School. The majorettes swept Regional and State Championships and then went on to become National Champions. These talented ladies then went on to repeat this phenomenal accomplishment by becoming National Champions again in 2001 at the Drum Majorettes of America National Competition in Boiling Springs, NC. Then they did it again! National Championship honors were achieved again in 2002 as well as garnering Straight Superior ratings by the Florida Bandmaster's Association. Way to go ladies! Individual acknowledgement is also due four of Mainland's finest majorettes. In 1994, Amanda Blank became Majorette Queen of America and this prestigious national title was garnered again by Mainland majorettes in 2001 by Angela Greco, in 2003 by Shannon McFarland, and in 2004 by Jennifer Kamps. To have four majorettes from the same school win this coveted title is truly amazing! Congratulations to our majorettes on these fabulous accomplishments. As competitions for marching bands continued to evolve so did the auxiliary groups. Mainland's first Flag Corps was formed in 1967. The beautiful synchronized routines of these groups add an additional element of fluidity and grace to our fabulous Buccaneer Marching Band. With the addition of rifle and sabre routines this group evolved to become the Mainland Color Guard in 1994 and took on their current name "Mirage" in 1996. This group, too, has a tradition of excellence in competition. In 1997 Mirage won 1st Place at the Sebastian Winter Garden Spectacular for Best in State honors and repeated as State Champions in 1998. This same year these talented ladies also won 1st Place honors for the State of Florida at the Rockledge Showcase of Color, as well as Most Outstanding Colorguard and Most Outstanding Choreography in the category for Marching Auxiliaries. In 2002 Mirage garnered Grand Champion honors at the 2002 Flag Camp. Since that time Mirage has performed at the Citrus Bowl on New Years Day. Congratulations! Mainlands most recent addition is our fabulous dance corps, "The Lady Bucs," who came on the scene in 1973 and have consistently won superior ratings for their fabulous shows. In 1998 they won the coveted crown of State High Kick Champions for the State of Florida and in 2002 were National Grand Champions in the category of American Open Cheer & Dance. With routines reminiscent of the Radio City Music Hall "Rockettes," these ladies are admired far and wide. Other auxiliaries that have performed for Mainland include the "Bucettes," a precision marching team of 1946 and "Fantasia," our performance dance teams of the mid 1990's. Lastly, it is important to recognize here the many years of excellent performances offered by our Air Force JROTC Honor Guards and Color Guards. We are very proud of all of our auxiliaries and appreciate their hard work at keeping our spirits high! Go Bucs! |
